Staff Charter Renewal Attendance and Public Comment

Posted Date: 10/18/24 (5:58 PM)

Dear Staff,

As mentioned on Wednesday, UMCS Charter is up for renewal this year! Our school is authorized by the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) and every 2-7 years, we submit a charter renewal petition to ACOE. There, staff and the Board of Trustees reviews our petition and vote to approve or deny our charter renewal. At the beginning of this month we submitted our charter renewal petition to the county and now we are asking for your support in the next steps of this process.

Public Hearing - Tuesday, November 12th at 6:30pm

As part of the renewal process we will present at the upcoming ACOE board meeting. At this public hearing we have 10 minutes to share with Trustees and the public what we do and why we believe our school’s charter should be renewed. This presentation is followed by public comment, where any member of the public can share comment in advance digitally, or for up to one minute each in person. It is important that the board of trustees sees our diverse population of families and students that we serve supporting us publicly at this meeting! Our ask is that you come, show your support, wear your UMCS gear, and if you have a compelling story, to share it in public comment!

While we encourage everyone to make public comment, I am also asking that you reach out and let me know if you plan to! It may be helpful for us to suggest an order for comments from families for higher impact! Please use the form below to share if you can come to the meeting and if you are interested in giving public comment!

Determination Hearing - Tuesday, December 10th at 6:30pm

One month later we have our determination hearing. At this meeting, we do not present to the board, but the community will have the opportunity to give public comment again before the board votes on our renewal. Again, we want to show up and show our support for our school, community, and staff! This is the last opportunity to give comment on why our school is a needed option for families, so it is important to share how UMCS has impacted your family and student (or have them share their story). Please use the form below if you can attend and/or if you have a story you want to share with the board!

While renewal can seem like a tense and stressful time, it really is an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our school, why we love UMCS, and to demand that the only public Montessori School in Oakland continue to serve the students here.

Please take a moment to fill out the form below and I will reach out to those of you who can attend one or both meetings to plan for a successful renewal of our charter!

In community,

Daniel Bissonnette
